Serbia to play Switzerland in Novi Sad

Serbia has announced the venue for what could be a mouth-watering Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group first round encounter against Switzerland on 31 January-2 February 2014.

Fans in Novi Sad could have the chance to watch the likes of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka in the opening round of next year’s competition when Serbia and Switzerland go head-to-head on a hard inddor court at the Spens Sports Center.

This will be just the second time that Serbia has contested a Davis Cup tie at the Novi Sad venue, with the only previous match-up there coming against India in the first round in 2011.

The Serbians will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing defeat in the final last month, which was their first loss on home soil for more than two years, while Switzerland will be hoping to win a World Group first round tie for the first time in a decade.

The last time the Swiss advanced to the World Group quarterfinals was in 2004, when they defeated Romania. Much will depend on the availability of the star duo of Federer and Wawrinka, but with both players ending the year in the Top 10 they have a dangerous team on paper
